The Huntington Public Library has been a part of Candid’s (formerly known as the Foundation Center) Funding Information Network for over 35 years. As a Funding Information Network library, we provide visitors with free public access to a core collection of Candid’s publications and databases as well as a variety of supplementary materials and services in areas useful to grantseekers. At our location, you can access the Foundation Directory Online (FDO) Professional and Grants to Individuals databases and other resources to assist and strengthen your nonprofit organization.

Representatives of nonprofit and grassroots organizations and other patrons are welcome to use the databases at the Main Branch at 338 Main Street at any time during our open hours.

Foundation Directory Online (FDO) Professional

The Huntington Public Library provides free public access for grant seekers of 501(c)(3) organizations to the Foundation Directory Online (FDO) Professional database. FDO Professional is the one of the most comprehensive prospect research tools for fundraisers with over 240,000 grantmaker profiles, allowing users to search for grantmakers who have funded organizations working on causes and with communities similar to those you serve. 

FDO Professional includes:

  • 242,000+ grantmaker profiles
  • Details about 24.7 million+ grants
  • 2.2 million + recipient profiles
  • 1.2 million + key decision makers and leaders
  • Searchable 990s and 990-PFs


Grants to Individuals

(on site only)

HPL provides access to Candid’s Grants to Individuals, an online database of 10,000 grantmakers funding students, artists, researchers and other individual grantseekers through scholarships, grants and fellowships. Information contained about each funder includes application information, limitations on funding and financial data. The database also provides direct access to RFPs for individuals not associated with a nonprofit right on its homepage.

990 Finder

Search this database of individual 990 tax forms for fiscal data, contact information and grant information for private foundations, public charities and other nonprofits.

This database provides information on more than 1,000 federal grants administered by 26 federal agencies and is managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is searchable by agency or category, but is primarily used as a tool to submit grants in the grant application process. 

NYS Grant Opportunities

The Grant Opportunity Portal provides a one-stop-shop for anyone interested in identifying New York State grant funding opportunities. Anyone can access the Grant Opportunity Portal. A username and password are not necessary to view anticipated and available grant opportunities.

Guidestar consists of over 2.6 million profiles of nonprofit organizations including 1.9 million 501(c)(3) entities. It includes both funder and recipient organizations with information such as the group's mission, programs, finances and staff and board members. You must create a free account to access it.

Candid Learning (formerly known as Grantspace) connects grantseekers to Candid’s live and on-demand trainings, webinars, and other resources designed to improve an organization's fundraising, overall sustainability, grantmaking, and transparency.

Tutorials such as Candid's Introduction to Finding Grants and Introduction to Proposal Writing are available at this site.

Create a free account to view actual successful grant proposals and business plans in the Sample Documents section. You can also view Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and sign up for RFP alerts for possible funding opportunities in your subject category.

Nonprofit Start up Assessment Tool

According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are over 1.5 million registered nonprofit organizations in the U.S and this number continues to grow as new nonprofits are formed. Each year, over 60,000 groups apply for tax exempt status.

Candid's Nonprofit Startup Assessment Tool was created to help aspiring nonprofit founders determine whether they are ready to start a nonprofit and to direct them to the resources they need to build skills and gain knowledge of the sector. This assessment is for people who are either considering or are already in the early stages of starting a nonprofit. Questions will evaluate background knowledge, capital, and work experience that are relevant to starting a nonprofit. You need to a free Candid Learning account to access this tool.
