Great Books Reading and Discussion Group

Please join us to discuss “The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám,” as translated by Edward FitzGerald (1809-1883).

The library invites you to share in an exploration of highly regarded classics of literature, history and philosophy through a discussion technique known as “Shared Inquiry.” Selections are from Great Conversations 6, available for purchase at the Main Library front desk at the reduced price of $10, thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library.

Omar Khayyám (1048-1131) was a Persian mathematician and astronomer. “Rubáiyát” is Persian for “quatrain,” a poetic stanza of four lines. This work is a compilation of 101 of these stanzas, as translated by the English man of letters Edward FitzGerald, and contains the immortal words: “The moving finger writes, and having writ/Moves on: Nor all thy piety nor wit/Shall lure it back to cancel half a line.”
