Great Books Reading and Discussion Group

Please join us to discuss “Rabbi Ben Ezra,” by Robert Browning (1812-1889).

The Library invites you to share in an exploration of highly regarded classics of literature, history and philosophy through a discussion technique known as “Shared Inquiry.” Selections are from Great Conversations 6, available for purchase at the Main Library front desk at the reduced price of $10, thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library.

Philosopher, astronomer and poet Rabbi Abraham ben Meir ibn Ezra (c. 1092-1167) lived in present-day Spain. As his dates show, he was a direct contemporary of Omar Khayyám. The great English poet Robert Browning in the 1860s published a book titled Dramatis Personae, in which he offers to us fictional recreations of historic figures, including the so-named Rabbi Ben Ezra. The poem opens with the stirring lines “Grow old along with me!/The best is yet to be.”
