Great Books Reading and Discussion Group

Please join us to discuss “Discourse 7,” by Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792).

We invite you to share in an exploration of highly regarded classics of literature, history and philosophy through a discussion technique known as “Shared Inquiry.” Selections are from Great Conversations 6, available for purchase at the Main Library front desk at the reduced price of $10, thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library.

The great British portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds presented “Discourse#7” at an awards ceremony at the Royal Academy of Arts held in the momentous year of 1776. He begins the Discourse with a statement to young art students that “the industry I principally recommended is not the industry of the hands, but of the mind.” How to cultivate the mind? By making reading a “favorite recreation of leisure hours,” AND with “conversation of learned and ingenious men, which is the best of all substitutes for those who have not the means or opportunities of deep study.”
