Please join us to discuss "Why Write" by Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980).
We invite you to share in an exploration of highly regarded classics of literature, history and philosophy through a discussion technique known as “Shared Inquiry.” Selections are from Great Conversations 5, available for purchase at the Main Library front desk at the reduced price of $10, thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library. Please note, there will be no December meeting.
The great twentieth-century French philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre, wrote “Why Write,” first published in the influential French political journal Les Temps Modernes, in an effort to create what he called “literature engage,” or a politically engaged literature. The piece deals with the literary moral imperatives in the years immediately following the Second World War, in particular with the need for authors to become morally and politically engaged in the issues of the day.
