Please join us to discuss “The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness,” by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971).
We invite you to share in an exploration of highly regarded classics of literature, history and philosophy through a discussion technique known as “Shared Inquiry.” Selections are from Great Conversations 5, available for purchase at the Main Library front desk at the reduced price of $10 thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library. Open to all.
Niebuhr, an influential Protestant theologian, develops his ideas concerning the crisis of Western democracy in the 1930s and 40s that led to the birth of totalitarian regimes and the Second World War. Niebuhr believes democracy needs to reform itself in order to survive. He considers our modern civilization to be a clash of moral cynics, or “the children of darkness,” and moral idealists guided by a higher law, “the children of light.”
