"The Man Who Loved Islands" by D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) Synopsis: A short story by the great English writer, "The Man Who Loved Islands" can be profitably read as a fable. It tells of a man, Cathcart (the "Master"), who purchases three islands in succession. The first is a money-making venture, inhabited by Cathcart's workers, and "it depended on them all to make this world a world of true happiness and content." On the second he lives with his wife, and on the third he lives a solitary life.
