Women in filmmaking
Women have always been a force in filmmaking, but often their talents lost in a male dominated industry. Until the rise of feminism in the late 1960’s, female filmmaker’s voices were suppressed until such directors as Penny Marshall, Katheryn Bigelow, Soffia Coppola, and Jane Campion began to push through into the mainstream and begin finally winning Academy Awards. Through interviews and clips from documentaries and various films directed by prominent women directors, lecturer Greg Blank will examine the dynamics of sexism in the film industry, the challenges women have met and often overcome, and the artistic achievements of female directors over the years. Registration required and open to all.
