“Ethan Brand,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)
A group of veteran members now manages this long-standing Huntington Public Library book group. We invite you to share in an exploration of highly regarded classics of literature, history, and philosophy through a discussion technique known as “Shared Inquiry. Selections are from Great Conversations 2, available for purchase at the Main Library front desk for at the reduced price of $10 thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library.
Please join us to discuss “Ethan Brand,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). Bartram tends a kiln in the shadow of Mount Graylock in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. His predecessor in this occupation, Ethan Brand, has been away for 20 years in search of what Hawthorne calls the “Unpardonable Sin.” Brand’s return to the solitary mountainside and nearby town becomes a vehicle for Hawthorne’s reflections on the religious views of his New England forebears.
