Local artist Robyn Bellospirito will give a talk on how art impacted her stroke recovery.

“Beyond Words: Healing With the Arts After Stroke”, an exhibition by artist Robyn Bellospirito, will take place at the Huntington Public Library at 338 Main Street in Huntington, NY in October. On Sunday, October 6th an Artists Reception will be held from 1-4pm during which the artist will give a presentation at 2pm titled "Art & Stroke Recovery: A Healing Journey". The presentation will be held in the Meeting Room and will be interactive for those who wish to and/or are able to participate.

The Artist explains, “My strokes left me with mild aphasia, making art and music far easier than words. I am creating new paintings for this exhibition that will include input in the form of messages from other stroke survivors. My intention is to show those with communication difficulties like aphasia, how they can use art and music to express themselves and feel empowered.”

The exhibition will include many of the Circle paintings the artist did the first year after her strokes in 2022, as well as representational paintings she began in 2023. During the presentation in the Meeting Room, Bellospirito will share her experience as an artist and stroke survivor and how painting, drawing, and making music has helped her as she continues to recover. She will talk about aphasia and the difference between verbal language and expressing ourselves through art and music. She will introduce the Flute, Percussion & Vocal Healing program she developed and has presented at local assisted living facilities. Small percussion instruments will be handed out to those who can hold them and everyone will be guided to play music and join as they are able.

The library gallery and Meeting Room are on the lower level and are accessible with an elevator. This event is free and open to the public and all are invited to attend.

This program is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc.
