Please join us to discuss "Planning and Democracy" (from the Road to Serfdom) by Friedrich Hayek (1899 - 1992).
Share in an exploration of highly regarded classics of literature, history and philosophy with other library patrons through the discussion technique known as “Shared Inquiry.” Selections are from Great Conversations 2, available for purchase at the Main Library front desk at the reduced price of $10 thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library.
The Second World War was a crucible for the formulation of F. A. Hayek’s economic theories. According to the Austro-English Hayek, it was a mistake to view the central planning and coordination of the war effort as a validation of a socialistic system. Fascism and communism have more in common with each other than they do with the political economies of free market democracies, he argues. Hayek is considered as an advocate of certain strands of modern libertarianism, and this selection comes from his best-known book, “The Road to Serfdom.”
