“The Playboy of the Western World by John M. Synge (1871-1909): John M. Synge was an important figure in the Irish literary renaissance of the early twentieth century. In his comedic play “The Playboy of the Western World,” set in the West of Ireland, Christy Mahon becomes an object of veneration – especially among local women – when he returns to his small hometown with a tale of having killed his abusive father. The plot twists when his father turns up alive. Synge writes in his preface to the play: “In a good play every speech should be as fully flavored as a nut or apple, and such speeches cannot be written by anyone who works among people who have shut their lips on poetry.”
