Dreams of Decay: Shining a Light Into Abandoned Places
January 6-February 3, 2023
Reception: January 6, 5-9 p.m.
“Creepy, sad, beautiful – these abandoned houses hit all the right notes.”
– The New York Times
Bryan Sansivero has traveled all over America and the world photographing hundreds of abandoned homes. This collection focuses on found objects, remnants of past lives, and a ghostly sense of nostalgia. Sansivero’s photography offers the viewer an engaging juxtaposition; eerie and beautiful, unsettling and colorful. The viewer may question their own life, and where they and their things end up in the future. Shining a light into these dark spaces can be like stepping into another time or dimension, revealing a kind of lost dream world.
Sansivero’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Newsweek, Vogue, Elle Italia, People, The Telegraph, Daily Mail, Yahoo! News, MSN, CBS News, New York Magazine (The Cut), Business Insider, The Sun, Country Living, Architecture & Design, House Beautiful and The Weather Channel. His award-winning film Shadows of Kings Park is on loan to the Smithtown Historical Society, where it is used for research.
Huntington Public Library is proud to have his stunning debut book American Decay: Inside America's Forgotten Homes as part of our collection, also available at www.bryansansivero.com.
Joan Orr was a beloved quilt teacher in the Huntington area for over 35 years. She taught classes with the Huntington Historical Society and Adult Education with the South Huntington School District. Many of today's Huntington area quilters are her former students. Joan knew how to execute quilt patterns of varying difficulty, from beginner patterns to the expert. These small pieces on display were often made for her classes to show students examples of patterns and methods. We are pleased to have Joan Orr's daughter curate this creative and cozy display of her mother’s quilts.
The Exhibit runs through the end of January.
